Vacancy Ref: 2026

As a result of our continued success in securing work for our Occupational Hygiene Team, we are looking to recruit two enthusiastic and dynamic individuals for the role of Trainee Occupational Hygienist to join our team, in Wakefield.

If you are interested in a rewarding career, working for a highly respected, successful and established nationwide company, with over 30 years' trading experience, this is a great opportunity for you!

Roles and Responsibilities

The role will initially focus on shadowing qualified and experienced occupational hygienists whilst they carry out site work, to gain experience and provide a thorough understanding of the services that we provide to our clients, including a strong focus on report writing.

It is estimated that a minimum training period of approximately 6 months would need to be completed, before attending industry specific formal courses via the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).

This training period would include a significant amount of study time to become familiar with approved sampling procedures and relevant UK legislation, required to compliment the site experience gained. The role would require you to liaise with third party laboratories in ordering sampling media and submitting samples for analysis following site work, whilst maintaining a Chain of Custody. As well as assisting the team in responding to incoming enquiries in relation to the services offered by the department and gathering information using enquiry response forms and/or telephone conversations.

Person Specification

Ideally the successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A strong scientific background at “A” level standard and a science based degree is essential
  • Have an understanding of basic Health and Safety requirements within the UK, regarding employee protection and employers’ duties
  • Have a natural inquisitive nature to ask questions and investigate to obtain the “Full Picture” of site conditions and work practices on client’s sites and to gain an understanding of a massive range of industrial processes.
  • Be able to demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Have a flexible approach to working hours, as the role can require early starts and/or late finishes, with the occasional requirement for weekend working.
  • Be able to work way from home on occasions.
  • Be motivated and show initiative, as some studying will be expected outside of normal working hours.
  • Have a strong customer focussed work ethic, an exemplary professional attitude and be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills.
  • Hold a full driving license. Although no vehicle will be offered during the initial training period, once competency is achieved, a company car will be provided.
  • Have excellent oral communication skills and be capable of writing clear, well presented, and accurate reports.
  • Full driving licence (please confirm you have a full licence on your CV or covering letter)
  • Be willing to provide an enhanced DBS disclosure, the cost of which will be reimbursed by the company.

What We Can Offer You

  • The hours of work are 40 per week Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm (with some flexibility required to meet the needs of the clients).
