Following the announcement by Boris Johnson earlier this week, we are aware that many of our clients will have taken the difficult decisions to reduce staffing levels or the closure of their buildings, to assist in reducing the spread of Covid-19.
However, please be aware that such actions can increase the chances of Legionella surviving in water systems as a direct result of low turnover of water within systems that are not being used as frequently, or as a result of existing control measures that are in place not being implemented at times of closure or low occupancy.

We are delighted to announce that our Charity of the Year for 2020 is The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
RNLI crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives since 1824. Their volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, and seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches. They also help those affected by flooding across the country.

Our charity of the year fundraising has come to an end and we are proud to announce we have raised an amazing £2000 for MIND Charity. We ran a series of events throughout the year including charity runs, raffles and bake sales and we are delighted to be making this donation to support a charity who provide advice and support to those experiencing mental health problems, across the country. We will soon be announcing our Charity of the year for 2020 and hope that we can raise just as much as we did in 2019!

Asbestos fibres have been added to thousands of different product types which we will be having a look at each month in our 'Asbestos Product Spotlight'.
Asbestos fibres can be released through impact, wear, weathering, and ageing, as well as when being worked on. If inhaled, these fibres can lead to serious and incurable conditions and diseases. Keeping asbestos in good condition (including having any work done by properly-trained people), will reduce the risk of inhaling asbestos fibres.
Asbestos Textured Coatings:
- Are often (and, often, incorrectly) referred to as “Artex”;
- Usually contains around 5% chrysotile (“white”) asbestos fibres;
- Used as a decorative covering on ceilings and / or walls;
- Fibres are generally well-bonded into the material;
- Are generally low-risk.

Due to the popularity and success of our BOHS P405 Management of Asbestos in Buildings course in the West Midlands and Yorkshire, we are excited to be expanding the course which will now also run at our new venue in Kent.
The training course is delivered by our trusted and experienced nationwide trainers and provides delegates with the knowledge and skills to be able to manage asbestos in buildings and the information required to be able to conduct audits.

Asbestos was widely used throughout the Armed Forces, particularly in ship building and general construction due to its heat resistant properties, non-flammable nature and convenience. Although it had been used commercially for many years before, armed forces relied heavily on asbestos during World War 2. At this time neither the military members nor the government knew of asbestos’ cancerous characteristics.

During World War 2 asbestos was often used in vehicles such as:

- Aircrafts
- Ships
- & Submarines

In September, we held our charity bakesale and managed to raise an amazing £92 for Mind, our charity of the year. Thanks to our staff who contributed some delicious cakes including cherry bakewells, chocolate cake and sausage rolls!

This month, Bradley Environmental reflects on the 20th anniversary of the Asbestos Prohibition (Amendment) Regulations 1999 coming into force.
On the 24 November 1999, the UK outlawed the import, supply and manufacture of asbestos containing materials (ACMs). The Asbestos Prohibition (Amendment) Regulations 1999 formed the pinnacle of a series of laws that were put into place with the first ban coming into force on 1st January 1986 (The Asbestos Prohibition Regulations). As the debilitating health risks associated with the inhalation of asbestos fibres became increasingly apparent, the pressure for a national ban began to mount.
Many people don’t realise that during the 70s and early 80s, only voluntary bans were used to control the import of asbestos into the UK.
