Dust 2In June and July, the HSE will be targeting firms across Great Britain in a new series of inspections focussing on dust control. The inspections will concentrate on industries such as construction, woodworking and food manufacturing where occupational lung diseases, including some cases of occupational cancers, are more common.

The visits, which will be taking place across the country, will be focussing on what measures have been put in place to protect worker’s lungs from the likes of asbestos, silica, wood and flour dust.

They are looking for evidence of businesses knowing the risks, planning their work and using the right controls. Where necessary the HSE will also use enforcement to make sure workers are protected.

showerA comprehensive Legionella Risk Assessment is the starting point to establishing an ongoing water system control scheme.

HSE legislation requires that any property containing a water system should have a Legionella Risk Assessment in place, which should be reviewed every 2 years to identify any significant changes in the system, design or operating conditions. The control scheme is the most important aspect in preventing the risk from Legionella exposure and ensuring compliance with the HSE guidance Acop L8 “The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems”.

Why is asbestos in buildings dangerous?

“Asbestos is not just a problem of the past. It can be present today in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000.” – HSE

Asbestos still kills around 5000 workers each year, this is more than the number of people killed on the road. Around 20 tradesman die each week as a result of past exposure to asbestos.

When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything. This is why it is important that you protect yourself and your employees now.
