This week is Breathe Easy Week, an initiative started by the British Lung Foundation, to raise awareness and focus on lung health. Each year, it is estimated that 12,000 people die from work-related lung diseases linked to exposure during their working lives. The HSE are shining a light on work-related lung diseases during this important awareness week to ensure employers whose workers are at risk of breathing in certain dusts, gases, fumes and vapours, have effective control measures in place to protect workers from occupational lung disease.
Employers have a legal responsibility to protect their workers’ from serious, long-term lung damage. This is why it is vital that employers in higher risk sectors, such as construction, welding and stonework, assess the risks, plan their work and have effective controls to protect their worker’s respiratory health. Breathing in dusts, gases, fumes and vapours in the workplace can cause serious, long-term lung damage and often incurable health problems which is why shining a light on these work related lung diseases is so important. - 10,000 people are diagnosed with a new lung condition every week;
- More than 700,000 people are admitted to hospital each year due to a lung condition.
