Did you know at 20 - 45°C your water is at risk of Legionella bacteria growth? In the UK it’s a legal requirement for all businesses to have a Legionella and Water Hygiene Risk Assessment in place.
Legislation
The Acop L8 "The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems" and The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 place strict obligations on ALL employers, building owners and landlords to undertake a Legionella and Water Hygiene Risk Assessment on all workplace buildings where there is a foreseeable risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria.
This includes hotels, gyms, retail premises, leisure clubs, offices, warehouses and large process systems in factories and foundries etc. This also applies to those who provide residential accommodation or who are responsible for the water system(s) in their premises.
Furthermore, dutyholders, including employers, those in control of premises and those with health and safety responsibilities for others, must comply with their legal duties in relation to Legionella. These include:
- identifying and assessing sources of risk
- preparing a scheme to prevent or control risk
- implementing, managing and monitoring precautions
- keeping records of precautions
- and appointing a manager to be responsible for others
